Value-based Primary Care
VBPC is a health care delivery model in which the physicians are paid based on the value provided and the improved health outcomes of their patients, rather than the volume at which they process patients. Now, this sounds like a common sense way to pay providers, however, the more familiar model is fee-for-service (FFS) insurance, typically managed by the plan administrator.
The traditional FFS model reimburses physicians according to the volume of services they provide (i.e., how many office visits/patients they get through), regardless of value. As a result of this model, there are limited incentives to provide quality care and spend time understanding the patients needs with each visit let alone between visits. In a proper primary care model, less than one-third of the time is it necessary to physically go into a clinic.
